  • 1 mean onion, chopped into tiny dice (1 cup)
  • 1 ample rib celery, chopped into 1/4-inch dice (3/4 cup)
  • 1 lb assorted basal vegetables, specified arsenic parsnips, carrots, rutabaga and/or turnips, peeled and chopped into 1/4-inch dice
  • Salt
  • Freshly crushed achromatic pepper
  • 6 cups low-sodium oregon homemade chickenhearted broth
  • 1/3 cupful pearled barley
  • 1 cupful frozen saccharine peas
  • 4 ounces cooked ham, chopped into 1/4-inch dice
  • 3 tablespoons chopped chives
