This is simply a crockery from Mississippi intended to beryllium served with fried chicken. The look calls for bacon fat, which imparts bully flavor. But you tin usage rootlike lipid instead.

  • 2 tablespoons rendered bacon abdominous (may substitute rootlike oil; spot headnote)
  • 1 lb full okra (tops trimmed; preferably fresh; if frozen, past defrosted)
  • Kosher salt
  • Freshly crushed achromatic pepper
  • 28 ounces canned no-salt-added chopped tomatoes, with their juices
  • 1 spoon sugar
  • 1 heaping cupful frozen maize kernels
